At the end of this lesson, you will be able to describe healthcare services. You will become familiar with the West African medical system, request information about hospitals and patients, discuss dental and personal care services, and compare military and field hospitals.

Tip of the day: Scheduling appointments in hospitals
While it is possible to schedule time with a doctor when seeking treatment in a private clinic, in state hospitals, doctors do not take appointments. The service is rendered on a first come first served basis. It is always a good idea to go early to beat the crowd and make sure that you can see a doctor that same day.

Scenario:
Read the following scenario, and then complete Exercise 1.
John is checking out at the doctor’s office and needs to find out where he should go for certain tests.
John: Le docteur a ordonné une analyse de sang. Où est-ce que je dois aller?
La secrétaire: Au laboratoire. Voici le nom et l'adresse.
John: Merci. Est-ce qu'il faut prendre rendez-vous pour une prise de sang?
La secrétaire: Ce n'est pas nécessaire, mais c'est préférable si vous ne voulez pas attendre trop longtemps.
